This is John Batchel, conversation with colleague Marina Yaravskaya, a Russian filmmaker, video, nonfiction, dissidents, social concerns.

She comments on how the con film festival, the largest in the solar system, is welcoming to social concerns, whereas many other forum are not

now, especially if they focus on Vladimir Putin's abuses of the Russian people.

In this particular case, Marina and her colleague Paul Gregory have made a documentary about a survivor

of the Alexei Navalny party in Russia.

Navalny, it is believed, was murdered by the Russian authorities.

In any event, his followers, his party are all in jail or on the run.

And Marina finds that Russians are reluctant to get involved,

and film festivals are reluctant to get involved. But she speaks well of Khan. Here's Marina

I think that Cannes, first of all, it's the largest cultural event on the planet, and it has the

largest film market where films are bought and sold, and it's not like that everywhere in the

planet. For example, in Korea, they still watch

social issues, films and they still buy and sell them, as I learned from being at the market.

And also, I think it's slightly different in Europe. I think that the situation is slightly

different in Europe and slightly different worldwide. But we're just talking America and Russia

at the moment.
