This is John Batchelor, conversation with Indiana Honeline about a student on an outing with his

class in the southern part of Israel.

This is the Nabatian Empire once upon a time. a very desert-like terrain, but in any event it was an

important trade route 2,000 years ago when the Romans occupied the region and

this young man finds a rock that turns

out to be a valuable connection to the copper mines to the possible gold mines to

everything in the region.

The Romans maintained a trade route and they guarded it and the object that the student

found was a lamp.

identifies the student here for having done the correct thing of finding something

1600 years old in the sand.

Yoneton Frank was a 16-year-old pupil from the Tamara High School

who together with his class from

Hoda Sharon were on their annual field trip which all Israeli students do and

this was on the scorpion's ascent in southern Israel and when they stopped for lunch next to one of the old

Roman forts in Masad Safir he began to pick up rocks to look at them and one of them he saw was different and brushed off the sand and he noticed that there was design and he realized this was man-made object and he brought it to the teacher who then went to the archaeologists in the Southern Authority and they discovered it was an oil lamp that was produced in Petra in Jordan in the fourth to fifth century and on that very

site the father of Israeli archaeology Nelson Gluck 90 years ago almost to the

day found an exact duplicate of that very rare oil lamp produced

in Petra that the young student found.
