This is John Batchel, a conversation with my colleague, Caleb Weiss. He's based in East Africa,

looking at Somalia, in a state of civil war for many decades. Al-Shabaab is the threat to the

Mogadishu government. However, there is another story emerging. I asked Caleb about investment in Mogadishu.

It is relatively safe compared to 10 years ago, I learned. And who's there? Turkey's there.

Turkey's everywhere. Very smart investment. Somalia is a fragmented land, Puntland,

Somali land to the north.

Everybody wants to go their separate way.

Al-Shabaab advancing in the provinces.

But there's investment in Mogadishu.

It does, yeah.

Turkey, Qatar, and a few other Arab states are investing and building up parts of Mogadishu.

But you also have a large African component of investment in Mogadishu,

as well as, you know, diaspora Somalis with remittances and moving back or, you know,

investing in their home land capital.

So Mogadishu now, even though it is still very dangerous, it is relatively more secure than what it was a decade ago.

And since then, you know, foreign countries and citizens and, you know, diaspora Somali have been investing and building up parts of Mogadishu.
