This is John Batchelor, conversation with my colleague Judy Dempsey, the scholar for a Carnegie

Endowment for International Peace based in Berlin, about an issue that is very dominating in the political lives of European Union members

as well as North America and this present campaign.

Migration, immigrants, what is to be done with people crossing the

border who do not have the proper documentation. It weighs on Germany a great deal. One version of an answer right now is so-called Schengen Area Agreement

to be altered, that is, challenges at the border, asking for origins, other questions that were not in place these last years of the Schengen

Area Agreement, common territory in the European Union, 27 nations, number one trading partner with the US, very, very

sophisticated nation states. However, and Judy comments on the alteration and why and what it means and even on the possible ramifications for

international peace.

It's certainly dark is the picture in terms of what the EU stands for a collection of

states without borders and COVID certainly changed this and created a serious precedent on putting up border

controls and checking and one could understand why for health reasons and to stop the spread of COVID, now it's to stop the

spread of migration and terrorism and illegal trafficking and drugs and all sorts of issues.

And frankly, these controls should have been not introduced,

but the actual concerns should have been addressed a long time ago, several years ago,

because these issues are not you and these issues could actually be remedied much,

much easier without actually stringent border control.

Some of the border controls are stringent, others aren't away from through.

I don't think the Polish person who's commuting to Germany need worry that much.

The worry is the cues and the worry is that the police federation and staff here in Germany will start complaining because they don't have enough
