This is John Bachelor, conversation with my colleague Saadan Dumé of the American Enterprise Institute writing his column at the Wall Street Journal editorial page about the upcoming election in India beginning April 19th going on for six weeks. The candidates are led

by Norendra Modi leading the B.J. P. Party now in authority in the Parliament.

And Rahu Gandhi leading the Congress Party. The story turns on

however the Congress Party emphasizing caste system emphasizing how you born, not what you've achieved in life or what you want to achieve.

Modi's party, on the other hand, a Hindu nationalist party, has been successful in de-emphasizing caste and bridging the gap between

all the cast I learned from Sadenan, for example, there are 3,000 casts and 25,000 subcasts.

Saadan here explains how Modi has united all this under one umbrella,

the success of it.

The main Hindu nationalist organization in India.

They identified this going back to the 1920s, you know, their effort has been to try to unite

as many of these very disparate Hindu costs under one umbrella as possible. And the real master stroke in terms of how they've

achieved this has really been Modi himself because what happened before Modi was that the BFP would get votes from all sections of society,

but it was widely seen as an upper-cost dominated party.
