White his new book on great ground which is the life of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain,

the scholar, the teacher of languages, the president of Bowdoin College, and most famously the commander of the 20th

Maine at Gettysburg the second day July 2nd 1863. What follows is a description by Ronald White of the events themselves that led to

the 20th main part of a brigade being deployed the left flank of the Union Army as the Confederate

Army came up the hill. This is all done in haste on the second day when the engineer of the whole of the Army, the

Army of the Potomac, spots that the exposed left flank, two hills, big round top and little

round top. If the Confederates were able to capture those hills and put their cannons there, they would

pummel the whole union line and history would change.

So this is the moment when Warren spots the problem, turns to the commander at hand, Strong Vincent,

and says you've got to get there and plug that line. Chamberlain following along is to be the left

flank of the left flank of the Army of the Potomac, all done in the afternoon after marching all night and most of the morning, in

the heat to reach the crossroads of Gettysburg.
