two-hour conversation with the author and historian James Holland. This is the second hour of our

conversation, the Savage Storm, the Battle for Italy, 1943, describing the strategic challenge to the fifth army on the western side of the

peninsula of Italy and the eighth army on the eastern side of the peninsula of Italy.

Two lines established by the Germans for defensive positions

knowing that if one was breached, the other one would not be. These are mountains, rivers

crisscrossing the landscape, and the challenge in the rain and ice and snow of winter times starting the rain started in

Mule trains were the only way to get equipment up and down the mountain passes. The mobility of the

Allied forces did not come into play. The photographs show jeep sinking into mud,

tanks not able to get any traction.
