This is John Batchel. Conversation with my colleague Charles Burton in Ottawa about the effect of the tariffs announced by Mr. Trump, 25% against Canada.

The feelings are strong, says Charles. We speak in specific of the election, which is likely in late April.

And Mr. Poldavra, leading the conservatives,

does he voice an opinion of the tariff, the 25% tariff? Indeed, he does. And does all of Canada respond patriotically to this apparent damage to the economy.

Indeed, it does.

Yes, I mean, certainly he has come out strongly in opposition to the imposition of these tariffs, and particularly to Mr. Trump's constant assertions that economic coercion will lead to Canada becoming the 51st state.

I think that, you know, there's a lack of understanding in the United States about the

fervor of Canadian patriotism and nationalism, and Mr. Poliev necessarily has to respond

to that within Canada. The amount of anti-American emotion is extremely high.

You know, we can't obtain any U.S. liquors or wines or beers here in Canada now.

Well, at least not in Ontario and several other provinces because of provincial monopolies.

And I think if I did serve a bottle of American wine at a dinner party, my guests might stand up and leave.
