This is John Batchel, a conversation with my colleague, Anatole Levin, of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft,

about the dilemma for the leadership in Europe, talking about Ukraine, talking about NATO,

talking about industrializing the base again to produce the weapons needed if the Europeans are to defend themselves in a world

after Ukraine. All of those are not connecting with the voting public. Anatole points out that the

voting public in all the countries, Germany coming up soon enough in several days. The voting

public cares about migration and the economy, not about Ukraine, not a top priority.

And this is an advantage for alternative for Deutschland and other parties that are labeled in Europe far right.

In America, that translates into the right.

Well, I mean, exactly.

If you look at the opinion polls in Europe, there is a quite radical disconnect between, you know,

the priorities of the political elites when it comes to Ukraine and defense and so forth,

and the priorities of the population, which is first,

the economy and second, migration. And of course, this especially migration, is driving support

for the radical right. So, yes, I mean, the present governments are caught in a very difficult situation.
