This is John Batchelor speaking with my colleague Charles Burton in Ottawa about the Trudeau government and the opposition, the conservative opposition led by Pierre Pallavra.

The question at hand was the Arctic. Is it defend it? Can Canada

defend the Arctic from the predator states? That would be China and Russia.

And has the conservative opposition come forward with a plan

to defend the Arctic parts of Canada exposed to the predators. It's a complicated answer. His Charles Burton to explain

why and when we can have clarity about the opposition and what if the polls are correct once they're in

power what they'll do about defending the Arctic Canada and North America from

the predators is Charles more of this to me and North America from the Predators.

Here's Charles, more of this tonight.

We haven't seen any significant position of the

Qualiev Conservatives with regard to foreign policy or defense.

I think that he's so far ahead in the polls that the strategy seems to be not to articulate

any positions for fear that that could cause him to lose advantage in the next election.

But we have no indication that Mr. Polyev plans to make any significant changes to Canada's defense allocations.

And as former President Trump has pointed out, this is not just a problem of today, this is a problem that's been going back decades

of Canadian underfunding on the assumption that when push comes to shove the United

States will defend us from foreign threats and I think that those days are rapidly

drawing to a close as the US adopts a more self-interested defense and

foreign policy stance.
