This is John Bachelor. Tonight I speak with my colleague Gordon Chang and my

our colleague Charles Burton of the McDonald's Lowry Institute about

Canada's reluctance to recognize and act on the fact that China is an

adversary with hostile intent a malign actor in the international community

across a broad spectrum of conduct but especially with regard its

false witness on the ambition of climate change net zero two-thirds of the

greenhouse gases since 2020 worldwide are from China and yet Charles Burton

explains how Ottawa continues to hope or plan or dream that some

aspect of China will pay attention to its climate policies

his child well I think that certainly there are significant

elements within the rolling liberal party who feel that the the liberal

parties policies towards China have been mistaken and cannot sustain

and so most recently similar to what Gordon was talking about with the Biden

administration the Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change has

gone to China on the basis that well you know they may be bad

in many aspects of global governance and violating the norms of the

international rules based order he doesn't quite put it so baldly but we need

them for you know for climate change which is of course complete nonsense in

the sense that China continues to develop coal fired electrical plants and

obviously has no intention to seriously respond to to the Western rhetoric

about climate change but on the other hand there's just so much force in

Canada that wants to see Canada change its China policy at least in ways
