This is John Dachster, conversation with my good colleague Bill Whelan of the Hoover Institution

about the protests, not just the protests in these last days, UCLA, USC, other parts of the California system, Berkeley, but also the protests reaching

back to the 1960s and the confrontations over Watts, over the Vietnam War, over the People's Park, how they were handled by the

governors in California at the time because Bill's looking for lessons learned and how they apply to Governor Gavin Newsom, who is generally

understood to be a major contender for the White House in 2028 following this cycle. And therefore lessons learned is

everything for governors commanding such a blue state with such power and authority and a education system that has

tens of thousands of students now protesting. We don't begin however with just

talking about the campus. there was an event in the

middle of April blocking of the Golden Gate Bridge disrupting the lives of

hundreds perhaps thousands of people who were trapped one-way traffic couldn't turn around.

How did the governor handle that?
