This is John Bachelor, speaking with Patrick K O'Donnell, his book The Unknowns, The Untold Story of America's Unknown Soldier,

and World War One's most decorated heroes have brought him home.

Eight bearers of the body of the unknown soldier met him at Dockside in Washington and

carried him to where the tomb is now. This is one of those

soldiers. They were chosen from different services, different parts of the

country. This is Ernest Janssen, who had another name.

It's a wonderful complication of the days

before there was digital identification of everybody.

Ernest Janssen was a hero, and he was chosen for his heroics at Bella Wood.

Bella Wood is about basically stopping the German army from taking Paris.

In the summer of 1918 the Germans launch one of their

great offenses. Initially it's a diversionary offensive, but it becomes the main offensive.

And there's a gaping hole in French lines that's formed because the French are demoralized

and literally are evaporating,

the units are evaporating.

And it's the second and the third divisions,

US divisions that are rushed to the front.
