This is John Bachelor, conversation with colleague Peter Berkowitz of the Hoover Institution

about a question for the candidates, the presidential candidates, about the persecution of Jewish students on elite universities across the country.

What is to be done?

Peter has a very specific recommendation on the basis of the law where organizations are to be

either forbidden, prevented, or in some fashion sanction

for persecuting individuals for their religion, their race, their

gender, their personality, anything like that.

And what we saw on campuses again and again was the presentation of

anti-Semitism that was not hiding itself? So what is to be done? What can

the candidates do about it when they're president presuming?

The federal government is prohibited by federal law from providing federal funds to universities that discriminate on the basis of race or national identity.

To the extent that the federal government finds that our universities are doing such,

they are obliged to cut off federal loans to students and research funds.

This amounts to support, especially at our elite universities,

being in the neighborhood of maybe half a billion dollars a year. So on this narrow question,

although hugely important question, that's the question I would want to know. on this

narrow question, will test both their moral intuitions
