This is John Batcher, conversation with Peter Berkowitz, the Hoover Institution talking about the recent extremely unacceptable conduct on college campuses across the nation, but especially the elite campuses,

behaving in an anti-Semitic fashion that is reprehensible at the same time,

appalling.

Peter comments here on the responsibility of the faculty members who didn't participate directly. they didn't march, they didn't

link hands, but did stand back silently and by standing back silent communicated to

the students.

Not to suggest for a moment that the majority of faculty members or administrators sympathize with the takeover of campuses with the chanting

of anti-Semitic slogans. They may not enthusiastically sympathize but but there not

not willing to take a stand even for the principles to which their institution

universities are properly devoted.

That is, they are not willing to step up and say the mission of our university is to transmit

knowledge to enliven the moral imagination, to cultivate intellectual acuity.

They just stand by in silence. They do not make a distinction between legitimate protests which are

governed by reasonable time, place, and manner distinctions and disruptive

demonstrations. So they turn themselves into part of the problem. The message of their

silence to students is that it's actually okay to to break campus law,
