As a classic moment when Wendell Wilkie, FDR's opponent in 1940, attacks Hopkins and says that he's a close advisor and he's acting like a president, he's making the decisions, he lives

in the White House, he is undue influence. Roosevelt responds in a campaign speech, stating,

Well, here's what I think of Harry Hopkins. We had a man who worked for a dollar a year in

Washington, who, with the enemy at our gate, kept this country going. He sleeps in a little

room upstairs in the White House, so he can be nearer to serve me.

When he got sick and the doctor's order to give up and leave, he stayed at his post of duty

until I practically ordered him out of Washington. FDR defeats Wendell Wilkie.
