| 1:22.6 | illegal in the U.S. in the 20th century? In 1937, there was concern about how cannabis was associated with crime. |
| 1:34.0 | People were bringing in cannabis from Mexico, and the FBI pushed to tax it and regulate it, |
| 1:41.3 | which made it very difficult for it to be sold in the United States. |
| 1:45.9 | And then in 1970, cannabis was listed as Schedule 1, along with heroin and cocaine, as a drug |
| 1:55.3 | that has no redeeming value and should not be used for any purpose. |
| 2:00.6 | And again, the concern was that there's really no benefit to cannabis. |
| 2:06.8 | And instead, what it's doing is it's harming the health of Americans. |
| 2:11.7 | It's contributing to crime. |
| 2:14.3 | It's degrading communities. |
| 2:16.3 | And so the federal government just made it illegal, like other drugs, cocaine, heroin, and so on. |
