Of course, it's still registered as a dangerous and not useful drug by the federal government,

but that might be about to change.

I'm Todd Wilkin, joining us to talk about President Trump and the possible downgrading of the federal ban on marijuana, Andy Schlafly.

He's an attorney for Ph Schlaffley Eagles,

co-author of a recent column for the Federalist titled Trump Reclassifying Marijuana

would be a huge political blunder. Andy, welcome back. Thank you, Todd. Why was cannabis made

illegal in the U.S. in the 20th century? In 1937, there was concern about how cannabis was associated with crime.

People were bringing in cannabis from Mexico, and the FBI pushed to tax it and regulate it,

which made it very difficult for it to be sold in the United States.

And then in 1970, cannabis was listed as Schedule 1, along with heroin and cocaine, as a drug

that has no redeeming value and should not be used for any purpose.

And again, the concern was that there's really no benefit to cannabis.

And instead, what it's doing is it's harming the health of Americans.

It's contributing to crime.

It's degrading communities.

And so the federal government just made it illegal, like other drugs, cocaine, heroin, and so on.
