Be content with your pay. The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ.

John answered them all, I baptize you with water, but one comes more powerful than I will come. The thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie, he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

And with many other words, John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them. But when John rebuked here at the tetrarch because of Herodius, his brother's wife and all the other evil things he had done, Herod added this to them all, he locked John up in prison.

This is God's word. Now, ever since the fall, actually, we've been looking at the fact that we live in what you might call, well, some people would say it's a society of spiritual searchers. It's a desperately seeking society.

1:36.0

And years ago, the same thing was true at the time in which the New Testament was written in the events about which the New Testament was written recurring.

1:47.0

Back then, you had another desperately seeking society. What made it desperately seeking was, first of all, it was a pluralistic society like ours.

1:56.0

It was a very cosmopolitan world culture society. And most importantly, the old certainties back then were dying just like the old certainties are dying now.

2:05.0

And we've looked at this since the fall.

2:08.0

The, what I mean by old certainties is in one sense, many of the traditional religions are dying. People are saying, this doesn't work for me.

2:17.0

But on the other hand, one of the reasons why people are searching now in a way they weren't even 10 years ago, and we've talked about this, is that even secular certainties now are dying.

2:27.0

The certainty of the secular person that says, this life is all there is, and we can account for life by just through science and just saying, this life is all there is, that's dying.

2:38.0

The certainty of secular skepticism is dying, and also the certainties of traditional religion are dying.

2:44.0

And the same thing was happening back then. Can't go into it.

2:48.0

Very similar time. And at that moment, back then, a man came forth, and someone said to him, teacher, just show us the father, and that will be enough.

3:02.0

And he looked at him and he said, Philip, if you've seen me, you've seen the father.

3:09.0

Now that is an unbelievable claim. That claim by Jesus Christ was, if you're seeking for God, and you find me, you've found God.

3:21.0

And we've been looking at that claim. I mean, you can't go by a claim like that. It's spoken into that time, and that place, which is so similar to our time and place that we've been looking at it, wait, since the middle of the fall.

3:31.0

I mean, looking through the gospel of John at these great claims where Jesus is saying, if you're seeking for God and you find me, you've found God.

3:40.0

But now, we have to conclude this series somehow, and I decided I was going to do it this way.
