This is John Batchelor, conversation with Judy Dempsey of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace,

editor-in-chief of Strategic Europe, she's in Berlin,

about the serial protests by farmers driving their beautiful tractors into city

center of the capitals of European powers. Germany to Berlin, Rome, of

Italy, Paris of France, of course.

The protests are continuing in Belgium, in the Netherlands.

What is the protest about?

Judy explains.

The farmers are concerned that they will not get the subsidies they have in the past and they

don't want to deal with or they're struggling to deal with globalization.

Here's Judy Dempsey to explain the farm protests in Europe that could easily be the farm

protests worldwide as the world shops for the lowest cost of food from anywhere.

It's not articulated because this would mean that the

farmers and the declining agricultural sector across Europe would have to admit that

globalization means that supermarket and shops are now full of foods from right

across the world not just Europe. So the farmers are clearly worried about this,

and the farmers are absolutely worried that their share of the big European Union budget will go down. It is actually gone down. They now

get about 20% of the EU budget and not only that they fear that enlargement if this extends to the West

to Bolton countries and particularly Ukraine a huge agricultural producer that

the share of of the EU budget will decline even further for the European farmers.

So yes, they're very worried, but it has to be explained.
