Chinese nuclear attack submarines sank during construction, the US says.

We welcome Rebecca Grant of the Lexington Institute to comment on the sinking of China's first Jo-class submarine, which, according

to Defense News, represents a setback for Beijing as it continues to build out the world's largest Navy.

Setback is a polite word, Rebecca. What does this mean for the Chinese capabilities to build?

Actually, this was a little bit of good news in the naval race with China, which is usually

full of bad news only.

So what happened here is China's trying, This is the first boat of a new class and it's always very difficult when you're working on the lead ship and for some reason this submarine which is still not finished sank at the pier.

U. How embarrassing and yet sort of good news for us here who wants the US Navy to stay ahead.

All sorts of reasons this could have happened.

The number one reason, of course, a submarine sinks

because water gets in it.

Anything from a faulty well below the water line

to something left open could have caused this but what it shows you

is that China is not quite the naval construction colossus that they make

themselves out to be and at least in terms of quality and technology

are submarine builders electric boat and Newport News still have the edge.
