This is CBS I In The World. I'm John Bachelor. The State Department is warning the United States

and all of its friends. A Chinese global disinformation campaign to undermine stability,

especially with regard to Eurasia. I welcome Craig Singleton. He is the China Program Deputy

Director for the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a senior fellow Craig disinformation

campaign. This is about the Uighurs in Xinjiang. The AP reports on a tour in late September,

sponsored by Beijing, 22 journalists from 17 countries visited Bazaar's and chatted with residents

of Xinjiang region, where the ethnic Uighurs are brutalized by the Chinese government.

These journalists were told state media, later they were impressed with the bustling economy,

described the region as full of cultural and religious and ethnic diversity and denounced what

they said were lies by Western media. What is this disinformation campaign? Who is running this?

Is this the first time we've heard about it? Good evening to you, Craig.

You know, thanks, John. I mean, this latest report, it adds to a growing body of evidence

about how China uses his deceptive methods to sow disinformation. And so China's goal

is to shape the global information environment by acquiring stakes in foreign newspapers and

TV networks, leveraging social media platforms to promote its views and then to exert pressure

on international organizations and media outlets to silence China's critics. But China, of course,

doesn't just push its own propaganda and you mentioned the Uighurs. It also exports digital surveillance

tools to police information and individuals online. And that includes deploying armies of bots

and trolls to boost its sensors to operations around the world.

The State Department, the AP reports laid out the Beijing's tactics and techniques for

molding public opinion, such as buying content, creating fake persons to spread its message,

using repression to quash unfavorable accounts. Now, this list comes in conjunction with the Uighurs.
