Summary

I’m joined today by my friend and colleague Tamara Duker Freuman. Long-time listeners will remember Tamara from previous episodes—most recently, clearing up the confusion around so-called Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Tamara is my go-to expert on all things digestive. She’s a registered dietitian, based in New York City and a nationally-known expert on nutrition therapy for gastrointestinal diseases. Her first book was The Bloated Belly Whisperer and she has a new book out this month.

It’s called Regular: The Ultimate Guide to Taming Unruly Bowels and Achieving Inner Peace.

The idea that being regular is the key to inner achieving peace may sound like hyperbole, but chronic constipation can have a huge impact on one’s quality of life. And a surprising number of people struggle with this. Our discussion includes:

  • Some little-known but very common causes of constipation
  • Why more fiber isn’t always the solution
  • When to consult your doctor
  • Which over-the-counter laxatives are safe for long-term use?
  • Why fiber can actually be constipating for some people
  • How to customize a dietary prescription that works for you

The book also includes sample meal plans for a variety of digestive issues—including options for those who don’t cook.

The book can be found in all the major outlets (if you can, it’s always nice to support an independent bookstore!) and you can find Tamara on Twitter @tamaraduker and Instagram @tamarafreuman or on her website:  www.thebloatedbellywhisperer.com

Hello and welcome to the Nutrition Diva podcast. I'm your host Monica Reinegel, and I'm joined

0:10.1

today by my friend and my colleague, Tamara Duker-Freumann. Long time listeners of the podcast

0:15.6

will remember Tamara from several previous episodes, most recently, on clearing up the

0:20.9

confusion around so-called leaky gut syndrome. But Tamara is my go-to expert on all things

0:27.6

digestive. She's a registered dietitian. She's based in New York City, and she's a nationally

0:32.6

known expert on nutrition therapy for gastrointestinal diseases. Her first book was called The Bloded

0:38.4

Belly Whisperer, and she has a new book out this month, April 2023, and it's called Regular,

0:45.9

the Ultimate Guide to Teaming on Rooly Bowls and Achieving Inner Peace. Welcome back to the

0:52.4

podcast, Tamara. Thank you, Monica. It is so good to have you. Okay, so you're suggesting here

0:58.8

that being regular is actually the key to achieving inner peace, which may sound like an exaggeration.

1:06.5

But the truth is that chronic constipation really can have a huge impact on somebody's quality

1:12.4

of life, and a surprising number of people seem to struggle with this. Why is that? I mean,

1:19.3

this seems like a really straightforward process. Food goes in one end of the tube, and eventually

1:25.0

it comes out the other end of the tube. So what is going wrong here? Right, so a lot of things can

1:31.2

actually go wrong along the way from the food going in your mouth to a formed perfectly moist bulk

1:38.5

bulky stool that gets to the exit before it gets too dried out, and then all the muscles and

1:43.6

nerves that have to coordinate to allow a stool to pass from inside to outside have to coordinate

1:48.6

exactly properly for that to happen. And so a lot of things can impact either the form of the stool

1:54.8

or the transit time of the stool or the muscle coordination that allows the stool to pass,

1:59.2

and anything that goes wrong along any of those dimensions could actually result in irregularity

2:04.9

or in this case constipation. Wow, you're right. There is a lot that can go wrong there,

2:10.3

and you didn't even mention anything about diet and lifestyle, which is usually all we hear about
