The U.S. and Iran reached a tentative deal to open the Strait of Hormuz and start nuclear talks, according to U.S. officials.

President Donald Trump hasn't signed off yet on the deal, and the situation in the region remains tense.

During today's White House press briefing,

Treasury Secretary Scott Besson declined to confirm details of the agreement, which could

also potentially extend the ceasefire. But he insisted any deal would need to meet Trump's demands

that Iran turn over its highly enriched uranium, commit to not pursuing a nuclear weapon,

and reopen the strait.

Yesterday, we told you Iran suggested that Oman would help manage the waterway.

Today, Besson threatened to possibly sanction Omani individuals or financial institutions if it

supported tolling the strait. But he said he's been assured that won't happen.

I had a call with the Omani ambassador this morning, and he assured me that there were no plans for tolling the strait.

As he said, our countries have had 200 years of good relations.

He wants to have another 200 more.

And I told him that this was a non-starter.

Meanwhile, in Lebanon, an Israeli source says the Israeli military targeted a Hezbollah commander

in the first strike in Beirut in weeks.

Lebanon's health ministry says dozens of people were killed in Israeli strikes yesterday

in one of the deadliest days since the ceasefire in Lebanon took effect in April.

The attacks come as Israeli forces issued fresh evacuation warnings for more cities in southern Lebanon.

CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for comment.
