At the time, she was a shy but powerful front woman to the Miami Sound Machine. The group that quickly realized she was so much more.

So they changed their name to Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine and eventually they just became the band for Gloria Estefan.

The Cuban American singer, songwriter is also a multifaceted artist and a philanthropist. Gloria is an international icon with over 100 million records sold.

38 number one hits on the billboard charts and she's a seven time Grammy winner. Along with her husband Emilio, they were the first couple to receive the presidential medal of freedom.

And Gloria is the first Cuban American to receive a Kennedy Center honor.

While her climb to the top has been steady, it hasn't always been easy. In early 1990, at the peak of her fame, she was in a severe bus accident during a snowstorm.

While touring for her best-selling album cuts both ways. It was major news.
