2:26.6 | And these demonstrators were mostly followers of our old friend Shiite cleric moktada al-sadr. |
2:33.6 | Yeah, there was hundreds of them. They breached the parliament on Wednesday chanting anti-Iran curses in a demonstration against a nominee for Prime Minister chosen by the Iran backed parties. |
2:48.6 | Now, of course, the demonstrators are all men. They were seen walking on tables of the parliament floor going through folders sitting in the chairs of lawmakers and waving Iraqi flags. |
3:00.6 | And this is kind of raising the stakes in the political struggle of Iraq. This is almost 10 months after federal elections. |
3:12.6 | So there were no lawmakers, as I said, there were security forces there. They appeared to allow the protesters in with relative ease. |
3:20.6 | So what was this all about? Well, they were protesting the recent selection of a guy named Mohammed al-Soudani as the official nominee of the coordination framework block. Great name. |
3:32.6 | That is a coalition led by Iran backed Shiite parties and their allies. This is the largest protest since those federal elections were held last October. |
3:43.6 | And this is the second time Saadr has used his ability to mobilize masses to send a message to his political rivals this month. |
3:52.6 | Number earlier in July, he called for a mass prayer and thousands showed up. So hours after his followers occupied parliament, Saadr issued a statement on Twitter. |
