A crash outside of Washington, D.C. has now become the deadliest U.S. air disaster in almost a quarter century.

Remember, an Army helicopter, and an American

Airlines regional jet collided in midair above Reagan National Airport. And sadly, the

search and rescue mission we told you about yesterday has turned into a recovery mission. All 67

people who were aboard the aircraft are now believed to be dead. Passengers included a group

of figure skaters, their coaches, and family members

who were returning from a development camp. Plus, there was a group of hunters who went on a guided

trip, a college student coming home for her grandfather's funeral, three soldiers, and many more.

Authorities have said the pilots of both the jet and the helicopter had plenty of experience,

and at the time of the crash, there were clear skies.

So how did this happen? Well, the investigation is still underway, but officials have brought up

some factors that could have contributed to the crash. For starters, this is one of the most

crowded, complex air spaces in the country. Lawmakers have been clamoring to add more flights

to make it easier for them to fly to and from the capital from their home districts.

In fact, just last year, Congress authorized 10 more daily flights in and out of the airport.
