Summary

The actor/writer/comedian joins us to talk about the philosophy of fashion, from the ancients to the present: Is clothing a mode of self-expression or something more (or less)? What does retro fashion say about the current state of culture? Are philosophers anti-fashion, and is that sexist? What color wedding dress is best for an arranged marriage? Are improv scenes like tissues?

Mark philosophizes at partiallyexaminedlife.com. Bill improvises (and teaches) at chicagoimprovstudio.com.

I guess I'm an improv expert if such thing exists, but I am a philosophy noob because I have a degree in fashion design and I chased after all of the art boys and not philosophy boys.

It actually gets deeper than you would expect. Yeah, I imagine so. I imagine so. Well, I don't know. I sometimes I often ask Mark, as again, I'm kind of new to philosophy as well. What did the ancients say? What did the ancient Greek and Chinese and philosophers from all around the world? What did they say? And being fashion, all I'm thinking about now are just togas, togas and robes and, you know.

1:22.4

You do not so much yet. So they were just like, you know, tie it on. That's what we're doing.

1:27.4

I would say loincloths. When you're really looking at the real ancients.

1:31.7

It's really nice that they found, apparently loins. According to what I see on the screens,

1:39.0

the ancient people, they were very careful to cover their junk. They were very careful to

1:44.0

cover exactly the

1:44.8

things that we're self-conscious about. National Geographic, I mean, that's bullshit. That's like

1:50.2

fake news, but like, you know, that Ringo Star Cave Man movie. I think that's kind of where I'm

1:55.3

drawn. Yeah. If all you've got is a hangar chip, you've got to make a choice. Yeah.

2:00.8

Top or bottom.
