He came of age educationally just after Martin Luther did, but in many ways Philip's education was a world of difference from Luther.

Luther was raised in that sort of medieval way and the medieval methodology,

whereas Melanchthon's early education was steeped in the new humanism.

He studied at the University of Heidelberg and there he took his bachelor's degree and then he went on to the University of Tubingen where he received his MA in the year 1514.

In 1518 of course that's a crucial year. This is one year after Luther has

posted the 95 Theses. This is the year that Luther would travel to

Heidelberg and present his theses there to the chapter house as the Augustinian monks were gathered.

It was in 1518 that Melanchin accepted the invitation to go to Vittenberg and be the first professor of Greek

at the university. Now, this was a crucial position. We know, of course, that in 1516, Arasmus published the Greek text. We know how

crucial that Greek text was for Luther even as he was posting the 95 theses. And we know how crucial that text is going to be for the

reformation. To study God's word in its original language, this in many ways

would be the bedrock of the Reformation and this was a malanchthon's task

To teach all of those students that would come literally from all over Europe study there at Vittenberg under Luther. They would sit in Melanchin's class,
