0:04.0	and big food companies have essentially corrupted our public health apparatuses and major institutions
0:09.9	that influence health policy.
0:11.7	And today's show we're going to talk about a recently published study that denumerates
0:14.6	just how bad this corruption is from a financial incentive level in its associations with
0:19.9	the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
0:22.0	The paper that we're going to lean on in today is titled The Corporate Capture of Nutrition
0:26.9	Profession in the USA, the case of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
0:31.6	Now this is a damning report and it's not unique to nutrition.
0:34.9	If you look at the New England Journal of Medicine, they've actually reported that about
0:38.0	86% of authors or co-authors have some sort of financial tie to major pharmaceutical companies
0:44.0	when drug trials are reported.
0:46.1	So this level of corruption is quite deep and we need to be aware of it at the very least
0:50.1	and create some sort of system to prevent this level of corruption from influencing health
0:54.9	policy that harms Americans.
0:56.8	As you know, about 94% of Americans have some degree of insulin resistance or metabolic
1:01.2	syndrome or cardiometabolic health abnormalities.
1:04.2	We also know that about 94% of the COVID-19 deaths had at least four underlying health
1:09.5	conditions that are mostly metabolically related.
1:13.1	So if we care about hospital capacity and saving lives, we should care that major food
1:17.5	companies are corrupting our public health apparatuses and associations that ultimately influence
1:22.7	health policy.
