Summary

Mike welcomes [The 45th Podcast's](https://45thpod.com/) Susan Simpson to the show, in Part II of The Politics Guys / The 45th Podcast host exchange. Mike and Susan open with a look at the shakeup at the VA, with Mike questioning the managerial qualifications of Ronny Jackson, President Trump's choice to take over for David Shulkin at the massive VA. Susan argues that no reasonable person would even want the VA job, and suggests that Jackson's fawning estimate of the president's health, along with a desire for power, are what may have made him Trump's pick. Next it's discussion of the recent announcement by the Department of Commerce that the 2020 Census will have a questions about citizenship status. Both Mike and Susan are skeptical of the motives of the Justice Department, which requested the question be added. Mike hesitates to call the move racist, but points out that any likely political advantage from the move will be to the Republicans. After that, Mike and Susan turn to a discussion of what North Korean leader Kim Jung Un's recent meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, and his upcoming meetings with South Korea's Moon Jae-in and President Trump, might mean. Mike suggests that President Trump's tougher stance could be bearing fruit, though he concedes that even a Democratic administration would have almost certainly ratcheted up sanctions in response to the North's nuclear tests. Susan says there's no policy here but chaos, and is concerned that President Trump might lead us into an unnecessary armed conflict with North Korea. Then it's a look at the March for our Lives and Justice Stevens recent call for repeal of the Second Amendment. Mike and Susan are both big supporters of the March and hope that it leads to significant change. They differ somewhat on Justice Stevens advocacy for a repeal of the Second Amendment. Mike feels it's a gift to the NRA and not necessary, as even the draconian gun regulations in Washington D.C. - far tougher than what most people are calling for - are possible without touching the Second Amendment. Susan doesn't entirely disagree, but argues that the Second Amendment can make reasonable gun laws more difficult to pass, and points out that even a repeal wouldn't make firearms illegal. After that, they discuss the increasingly strained relations between Russia and the United States in the wake of tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats and closing of consulates. Susan points out that despite this strong U.S. response - which she argues Trump was forced to make - we still haven't heard the president say anything negative about Vladimir Putin. She argues that's because Putin almost certainly has damaging information on Trump. **Show Notes** **What Susan's Reading & Listening To:** [Maryland appeals court decision in Adnan Syed case](https://bsun.md/2pTHSuC). This Politics Guys episode is part two of a host exchange between the politics guys and the 45th podcast,

0:06.8

which we put together to introduce our audiences to each other. Now, after I recorded and

0:11.5

initially posted this episode, I realized I forgot to do two pretty important things. First was to

0:17.7

welcome listeners of the 45th to the politics guys. So 45th listeners, welcome. I hope you'll like what you hear.

0:24.5

Second, I neglected to mention that today's show is a departure from our usual format.

0:30.3

My co-host today, Susan from the 45th, is left of center and so am I, though I'd say I'm to the right of her.

0:40.0

The politics guys is premised on a belief in the importance of constructive, civil dialogue between the left and the right, and so

0:45.4

ideally, Trey, who's our conservative libertarian political scientist host, would have been here

0:51.4

instead of me. Now, the schedule didn't work out that way, but in retrospect,

0:56.9

even though I thoroughly enjoy talking with Susan, and I feel like we had a great discussion,

1:02.3

it would have been really more in keeping with the spirit of the show had I arranged for

1:06.7

Trey to co-host with her. Finally, long-time listeners know that every once in a while when I take

1:13.2

a week off, we have a Trey J show, which means that the liberal side of things isn't represented.

1:19.3

Now, I'm working on bringing in a regular left-of-center co-host to come on to show when I'm away

1:24.3

so that we can maintain our bipartisan approach.

1:27.8

I expect that to happen very soon, and when it does, I hope you'll let me know what you think.

1:33.4

Thanks. And now, on to the show.

1:36.5

Welcome to the politics, guys, a place for a bipartisan, rational, and civil debate on American

1:40.6

politics and policy. I'm Michael Baranowski, a political scientist at Northern

1:44.5

Kentucky University. Now, regular listeners might recall that a little while ago, I was a guest

1:49.4

on the 45th podcast as part of one of a host exchange that we're doing with them. Well, this is

1:56.1

part two, and I'm pleased to welcome the 45th Susan Simpson as my co-host today.
