Summary

This week's show starts with a discussion of the 'national security' tariffs President Trump announced he planned to impose on steel and aluminum. Mike and Jay are in agreement that the tariffs are a terrible idea and not at all related to national security. Jay points out that this is an issue where President Trump is getting more support from Democrats from his fellow Republicans, who were generally upset and dismayed at the announcement. The president further disturbed many in his own party this week by suggesting he was in favor of tougher gun laws than most Congressional Republican are likely to support. Mike makes the point that we've seen the president make similar statements on other issues - immigration most notably - and then fall back into GOP orthodoxy in the end. The Guys also look at a variety of other gun policy related developments that took place over the last week. Next is a discussion of Russian president Vladimir Putin's bellicose speech about the U.S. threat to global security and new weapons systems Russia has developed to thwart U.S. missile defenses. This comes shortly after NSA and U.S. Cyber Command chief Mike Rogers told the Senate Intelligence Committee that we're not doing enough to prevent Russian cyberattacks on our election systems. Finally, it's a look at what seems to be a West Wing in disarray, following the departure of Hope Hicks as communications director. Mike and Jay agree that the extremely high level of turnover - especially in the communications area - is yet another indication that Donald Trump is an impulsive person who hates being managed and bridles at the necessity of message discipline. **What Jay's Reading :** [The Only Good Thing About Donald Trump Is All His Policies](http://on.wsj.com/2oFHUGD). Guys. I'm Michael Baranowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University. With me this

0:12.9

week is my regular co-host, Jay Carson, Cleveland area attorney with decades of experience

0:17.3

in the trenches of Republican politics. How are you doing this week, Jay?

0:21.8

I'm good. How are you? I'm doing just fine. You know, before we get to our first story,

0:27.2

there are a few little administrative things I just wanted to take care of. First off,

0:30.8

those of you who have listened to the show more than once, you might notice that there

0:34.8

was something new, some new theme with no music, a lot shorter,

0:40.0

and there's a little bit of a story behind this. I listened to a lot of podcasts. And so in thinking

0:46.1

about a new theme, and there were a lot of listeners, you say, your old theme is just so incredibly

0:51.1

dull, and we want something new. Well, I thought about how I felt.

0:55.8

My kids wanted to go back to the law of the government.

0:59.0

You know, exactly.

1:00.6

But there were other people who said, is this really, you know, kind of in fitting with

1:05.8

what you're doing, the sort of vibe, your trend?

1:09.3

It's a little impressive.

1:10.0

Exactly. And so I thought

1:12.6

those were reasonable points as well. So we came up with this. And I thought sort of, in terms

1:18.2

of how I view podcast intros, they're kind of like clever voicemail messages. You know,

1:23.8

they're clever once or twice. But after that, you're just, oh, God, can we just please skip this thing and move along?

1:30.1

And so I actually thought about maybe we should try no intro, but one of our board members

1:34.4

pointed out, you know, it's important to let first-time listeners know what we're all
