Summary

This week’s show starts by examining Trump’s ever changing statement on Charlottesville, VA. Trump would end up setting a more measured tone renouncing Neo-Nazi’s and other hate groups, but then on Tuesday Trump became combative with reporters and argued there are two sides to the story, specifically calling out the “alt-left.” The shift has seemingly shaken the White House as Trump goes off message again. Next, we look specifically at the ever evolving White House. This week it is the exit of Bannon. Early Friday news broke that Bannon had mutually agreed to leave, but that afternoon it became clear that Trump had asked him to step down. By late Friday reports emerged that Bannon would be returning to Breitbart. We talk generally about the White House churn and, specifically, what a “freed” Bannon means both for the news cycle and the White House. After that the Guys discuss Hope Hicks, the 28 year old interim communications director. We also respond to some listener mail. Welcome to the politics guys. I'm Michael Baranowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University.

0:42.9

Welcome to the politics, guys. I'm Trey Orndorf, and this is our week in review. We want to start by mentioning this week this week that we're actually doing the show on Saturday. So if anything crazy on Sunday happens, that's why you're not hearing about that right now. But we also wanted to announce that we're going to be moving the show up kind of semi-permanently. We're going to be dropping the show on Saturday afternoons as we move forward,

0:48.4

because in part, we think that you're going to get a better look at the week behind us so that we can kind of sum

0:55.5

those things up as the weekend ends. And then you can be ready to kind of listen to this in

0:59.3

the weekend or as you move forward in the beginning of the week. And so we're going to be starting

1:02.7

that this time, but we're not going to be mentioning that every week. So here's politics guys on

1:06.6

Saturdays, and that's what we're going to be doing as we move forward. This week, we've had lots of fascinating things taking place. Really last week blended into this week. Last week,

1:16.7

as I'm sure most of our listeners are aware, we had the kind of the Nazi white power movements

1:23.3

in Charlottesville, Virginia. So Trump has kind of a non-statement, and we spent a lot of time

1:28.2

last week talking about this. But then on Tuesday, Trump comes back after issuing kind of a more

1:34.7

generic condemnation of white nationalism and neo-Nazis in the alt-right. And he basically says,

1:42.9

we need to blame both sides. And he gets really

1:45.9

angry with reporters. And he has some really fascinating and some phenomenal quotes. He says,

1:51.6

you're going to quote, you have a group on one side that's bad. You have a group on the other

1:55.3

side that's very violent. Nobody wants to say that. I'll say that right now. And he's going to go on to say that once you start tearing these statues down,

2:03.6

you might as well just tear down Washington's statue and monument.

2:08.0

So, yeah, we got a lot of things to talk about this one.

2:12.1

So, Michael, what do you think about this, this non-statement that you guys have already talked

2:17.4

about once, but now we're coming that you guys have already talked about once,

2:17.8

but now we're coming back and he's kind of, he's entrenching himself, not only just taking a

2:23.1

non-statement, but kind of advocating, I have to say, here for the KKK.

2:27.9

Yeah, you know, I don't know if Donald Trump is a racist or not.
