Summary

This week, Mike and Jay open the show with their thoughts on Senator John McCain, who this week announced that he has a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer. Despite their occasional policy differences with Senator McCain, both of the Guys agree that McCain is a genuine American hero and wish him all the best as he fights his cancer. Next, it's a look at the confusing case of the Senate health bill, or bills actually, as there are at least four of them out there. Neither Mike nor Jay think any of them are likely to pass, and Mike questions how much of a legislative mastermind Majority Leader Mitch McConnell really is. They also discuss how President Trump might force the Obamacare exchanges into failure. After that it's a look at the shakeup in the White House communications operation, President Trump's lack of faith in Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whether Sessions talked with the Russians about policy matters during the campaign, and what to make of President Trump's electoral integrity commission, which held its first meeting this week. Welcome to the politics guys. I'm Michael Baranowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University.

0:29.9

With me today is my co-host, attorney and Republican strategist Jay Carson.

0:39.1

We start with our best wishes for Senator John McCain, who this week was found to have a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer. It's actually the same type of cancer that killed Senator Ted Kennedy, coincidentally, also around the time of a major

health care vote in the Senate. In that case, it was the passage of Obamacare in 2009. And as I

0:50.2

mentioned in the Friday preview newsletter, John McCain is actually the only politician

0:54.7

whose campaign I've contributed to.

0:56.9

That was back in 2000 when he tried to ride that straight talk express to the Republican

1:02.0

nomination, back when I was still, I guess, nominally a Republican.

1:06.4

And of course, unfortunately, he lost out to George W. Bush, who I would argue is probably the

1:11.7

worst president of my lifetime and maybe one of the worst of all time. That's another story.

1:15.9

But anyway, John McCain was, I think, the last politician I felt a real sort of passion for.

1:23.4

And while my view of him has changed a bit since then, his courage, his tenacity,

1:30.5

you know, his fighting spirit, I think there'll always be an inspiration to me.

1:34.8

And I certainly hope that he fights back against this.

1:38.2

I know he's a fighter and he recovers as much as one can from something as awful as this.

1:46.3

Jay, your thoughts on Senator McCain?

1:56.6

Yeah, I'll tell you as a Republican, of course, I've obviously had my frustrations with Senator McCain on a lot of issues.

2:09.7

But he is undoubtedly an American hero and someone who is someone, the kind of person that we would want to elect to the Senate, whether we agree with them all the time or not, as far as his,

2:15.6

the commitment he's demonstrated to this country uh goes above and beyond

2:19.7

probably anybody else in the uh the capital um i had the uh had the opportunity to meet and speak

2:26.5

with john mcane one time probably 25 some years ago uh when i was an intern at an organization
