Summary

This week Trey explains how hurricane Irma had him evacuate the state of Florida and offer thanks to all the listeners who inquired about his family and home. Then Trey and Jay turn to politics and the week's biggest story: Trump's United Nations speech. Trey, despite himself, was a bit impressed, but Trey and Jay disagree over the bigger implications of the speech. Most pointedly, they debate whether the Republican Party has given up on classical liberalism as an economic policy. Next they move to the escalating war of words between Trump and Kim Jong-un. Jay argues that we cannot have another cold war future and Trey offers a bit of caution to the rhetoric. After that they tackle the news that Facebook was being used by Russians for advertising purposes during the election and that Matt Drudge consistently linked to Russian propaganda. Finally Trey and Jay turn to the Alabama primary and Trump's unique endorsement before explaining why they didn't talk health care. Welcome to the politics guys, the podcast where we take the long-form view of politics and put it into deeper context.

0:35.3

I'm Trey Orndorf, a political scientist at Daytona State College, and I'm joined this week by Jay Carson.

0:42.2

Before we start moving more formally into our topic, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of our listeners who ask about my well-being online.

0:48.3

If you didn't already know from social media, I evacuated my family for Hurricane Irma, which is why you haven't heard from me in a while.

0:59.8

It's been really incredibly busy these few past weeks, and I didn't want to let everyone know that we are happy and healthy, and that even our home came through without any harm. So thank you again for thinking and praying about us and our fetloaf for the Floridians. With that, Jay, I'd like to turn to what I

1:05.0

think might mark the biggest story of the week. And for me, the big story is Donald Trump's

1:10.3

UN speech. I've been parsing the text

1:12.7

for a few days now, and I really think it's going to go down and is one of his most articulate.

1:16.9

And longtime listeners know, and anyone who follows us on social media knows that I am not a Trump

1:21.8

fan. So my praise here is just a bit unusual. I want to be careful, though. It isn't that I agree

1:27.3

with the content

1:28.1

of everything in his speech, as you might imagine, given my libertarian tendencies, but I thought it

1:32.8

was the best expression of his positions on some key global issues. I also thought it was a relatively

1:38.8

bold but tempered speech. So Jay, let me get your overall take on the Trump speech and then have

1:43.5

some specific passages I want to pull out. Do you agree overall? Okay. Well, I do too. And I've got my, I've got my

1:48.2

background music here. Oh, yeah. My Trump speech background. Um, but no, I would, I would agree.

1:57.2

I thought this was, this was Trump doing Trump the right way. He was blunt. He was to the

2:04.7

point. He had the rocket man line, which, which is a very, you know, again, the goofy Trump

2:10.1

nicknames. But, but it was still, it was an articulation of policy, which is something that you don't see or haven't really seen from Trump, maybe aside from his inaugural, where he's stepping up and saying, this is how I see the world.

2:32.1

This is how things ought to go. This is how I see, what I This is how things ought to go.

2:34.5

This is how I see, what I see is the purpose for the UN.
