Summary

We talk about the latest attempt at a Stephen King adaptation, Pet Sematary. The movie is genuinely scary and horrifying when it wants to be, unfortunately in our opinion they squander a lot of time and goodwill in the first act flailing about conceptually which keeps us from connecting with the characters and setting the way we should. But still, the family dynamics, endangered children, and a great Jon Lithgow performance does just enough to sell us when things that were better off left dead aren't. Hey everybody, welcome to another first round of bald movie tonight. Jim and I saw the new horror film Pet Cemetery based on a 1980s Stephen King horror novel of the same name.

0:42.0

I've I was not super familiar with the whole legend of

0:48.9

Pet Cemetery. I haven't read the novel I didn't see the original movie I don't recall.

0:56.3

But I was kind of vaguely aware of plot points and kind of knew what I was getting into.

1:05.0

But I know you were a much bigger fan of the original source material, so I'm going to let you give your opinion first, Jim.

1:08.0

Source material might be a little much.

1:10.0

I've definitely seen the original.

1:12.0

I was very impressed by the the movie I don't think I've ever read the book

1:18.6

But the the original movie is kind of where I take all of my pet cemetery knowledge.

1:24.0

So coming at this from the perspective of someone who's seen that movie, I thought this was

1:29.7

okay. I think it hits some of the same horror beats that the original does, although maybe not quite as hard or as clearly as I would like them to, and also it adds a little bit that I think I understand why they tried to add it

1:48.3

But I think it mostly fails in the stuff that it tries to add

1:56.7

But overall I thought it was a fairly I thought it was a passable horror movie. Yeah I think it was pretty messy and in and a lot of what was trying to do but the core like I guess

2:06.6

horror material I thought delivered the goods you know some classic archetypal you you know, and as Stephen King had a strong point or a hallmark is blending kind of like the mundane of horror and loss and grief in like a family context and like change and not

2:27.6

feeling like you have a place in the world and it does a lot of that more than it does just kind of like just straight up oh my
