Summary

If you need to see changes in your life, what is the process by which change really happens? And how does that change flow from belief in Jesus? The gospel is unique to all the religions of the world in that it says salvation is not achieved, but is received. So if you understand the gospel, and that salvation has nothing to do with how you live, why would you change? In Romans, Paul answers that, and in the process, he shows how faith in Christ concretely leads to changes. In Romans 6, Paul gives us three keys to real, profound life change: 1) you have to recognize the shape of your spiritual slavery, 2) you have to realize the scope of your cosmic unity with Jesus, and 3) you have to live daily out of your new identity. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 19, 2006. Series: In Christ Jesus: How the Spirit Transforms Us. Scripture: Romans 6:1-7, 11-18. The scripture is from Romans chapter 6. What shall we say then?

0:37.2

Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means. We died to sin. How can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death. In order of that,

0:55.2

just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may have a new life.

1:02.9

If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him

1:09.6

in his resurrection. For we know that our old self

1:13.7

was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer

1:19.7

be slaves to sin because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ

1:33.3

Jesus. Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.

1:41.8

Do not offer the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness,

1:47.8

but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life,

1:53.5

and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.

1:59.6

For sin shall not be your master because you are not under law

2:05.3

but under grace. What then shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means.

2:15.6

Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves,

2:20.6

you are slaves to the one whom you obey, whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death

2:26.5

or to obedience, which leads to righteousness. But thanks be to God that though you used to be

2:33.6

slaves to sin,

2:35.1

you wholeheartedly obey the form of teaching to which you were entrusted.
