Today, what if age is just a number?

I am now, I am told, 55 years old, teetering on the brink of 56, which is odd, because I feel almost exactly like I did when I was 28.

I may actually be a little more energetic and I'm arguably in slightly better shape.

This may be partly to do with my gluttonous diet and relative laziness in my 20s,

and partly to do with the wise counsel I have received from leading scientists on this podcast,

like Peter Atia and Kelly McGonigal on Exercise, Tim Specter and Chris Phantolikan on how to optimize your diet,

and Russell Foster about the importance of sleep.

Or maybe I just got a bit lucky with genetics, but I don't take any of this for granted,

looking at people around me, I'm confident the next decade is likely to involve a certain amount of humility.

But here I am in my mid 50s, feeling like I'm only midway through my career,

like there are several more chapters that remain in front of me, I don't know what they are.

At times I felt like I was making clear, linear progress, and other times when learning something new or starting from scratch,

I felt like I was taking a step backwards, re-assuming the humility of a beginner, sometimes learning from people younger than me.

Is that okay?

Should I feel comfortable starting from scratch in my 50s and 60s and 70s,

learning from young whipper snappers, perhaps even reporting to people 10 or 20 or 30 years my junior?

I just want to jump in here, Ruth, to say that I would be okay if you want to report to me.
