Hi, so I have a question in general, how we can change our federal politicians, meaning

0:13.0

is there a way that we as the people could institute term limits for our congressmen?

0:20.0

We already have term limits for governors and obviously presidents, but is there something

0:24.3

that we can do, I mean, because they're not going to vote on it, they're not going to approve

0:28.3

their own term limits.

0:29.6

What can we do as people to get this changed?

0:33.1

Yeah, well, good question.

0:34.7

So for those of you who can't remember learning about this in the fifth or sixth or seventh grade, give you the quick answer, there's two ways that the American people could bring forth an amendment to the Constitution. And it would take an amendment to the Constitution to actually create term limits for the United States Senate

0:55.7

and the House of Representatives. The first is, I think you know this, Joy, a congressional

1:01.3

proposal. So a current member of Congress on the Senate side or the House side could put forth

1:08.0

a proposal to amend the U.S. Constitution because this is a not, there's not

1:13.5

legislation. This is an actual amendment to the Constitution in order to get term limits. So,

1:18.9

it would take one of the 435 members of Congress, right, Senate House, to actually put the

1:26.6

proposal forward. And then it would take a two-thirds majority vote of

1:30.7

both the House and the Senate to actually get this going.

1:34.7

That's never ever...

1:35.7

Just to get it going.

1:36.9

No, no, to get it through.

1:38.7

No, no, the proposal, one person could do it.

1:41.0

To propose it.

1:41.8

Absolutely.
