Because they are so important in the workup of pelvic pain and sexual health concerns!  You will learn how I think about pelvic exams and how my exams are different than your "average" pap smear exams. I did the best I could to keep this one short and sweet! I hope it brings you value and understanding! - Dr. C. Things you will learn: Reasons that you need a pelvic exam with sexual dysfunction How you can “see” estrogen status with a pelvic exam. Clitoral phimosis is a thing! This can decrease orgasms. Hey guys, it's Dr. Casperson coming to you on my lunch break from clinic today.

And the topic I wanted to talk to you about today is pelvic exams, specifically the

0:12.0

pelvic type of pelvic exam that I do as a urologist who specializes in female health and female sexual dysfunction.

0:19.0

So I think when people typically think about pelvic exams,

0:22.3

they think about pap smears because pap smears are the common screening test for cervical cancer

0:27.3

that most women have gone through or should have gone through at some point in their life.

0:31.5

What's interesting about pap smear guidelines, and again, I'm not a gynecologist, so I miss

all the updates on pap smear guidelines.

0:38.5

0:47.9

And then they just kept going on until the end of your life.

0:51.0

And they've really narrowed that down to about 65 and then it's like

0:55.4

age of first sexual experience or early 20s. So they've really narrowed the window down.

1:03.1

And so what's happening is I'll see a lot of women, young women, who've never had a pelvic exam

1:07.8

before because they haven't had kind of the inaugural initiating pap smear

1:12.2

that women used to have. And then a lot of older women because they no longer need pap smares,

1:18.6

either their post-historectomy or they kind of have aged out of that screening guidelines.

1:24.5

Remember, pap smearers are screening for cancer. So you don't have,

1:27.7

as the guidelines change and say these women are really low risk, let's not subject them to

1:32.3

unnecessary exams. Fair enough. But so I see a lot of women in the older ages, 70s and 80s, and

1:38.3

they say, I thought I was done with this. I didn't think I'd ever need a pelvic exam again.

1:42.6

But the story is, if you come to see a gynaecologist,
