Philip Franco's show. You daily dive into the news, starting with this. The House just passed

0:26.5

Trump's big, beautiful bill today. A bill that's been described as the worst piece of legislation

0:31.1

in modern history. A bill that's predicted to have sweeping, devastating impacts for just

0:35.4

countless Americans. Taking Medicaid away from 17 million people, gutting access to food stamps, and just generally hurting the poorest people in America while delivering trillions of dollars in tax cuts that will benefit the rich. Because when we last talked about this yesterday, you know, I said, I think this is going through, but it was unclear at the time if the House was going to successfully pass it, at least by the July 4th deadline that was set by leadership.

0:54.2

Because the more moderate members upset about the fact that the Senate package made even deeper cuts to Medicaid than the version initially passed by the House in May. But then at the same time, you had conservative hardliners angry that the Senate had made additions that would increase the cost of the legislation and remove some of the cuts at the House bill it made to food stamps and other programs. But then actually turning out that the fiscal hawks were the biggest hurdle.

1:11.9

Many in that faction were upset that House Speaker Mike Johnson was just plowing of the cuts at the House bill it made to food stamps and other programs. Was it actually turning out that the fiscal hawks were the biggest hurdle?

1:11.9

Many in that faction were upset that House Speaker Mike Johnson was just plowing ahead with the Senate version of the bill without allowing the lower chamber to make changes. Demanding that they be allowed to negotiate and effectively stalling procedural votes necessary to move the bill to the floor for debate. Despite their so-called strong objections, a big question was, you know, was this group going to ultimately cave to pressure from Trump, as they've been known to do?

1:29.4

And wouldn't you know, was this group gonna ultimately cave to pressure

1:28.0

from Trump as they've been known to do? And wouldn't you know it, history repeated itself. Though, you know, keep in mind, they were essentially holding up the bill because they were like, I don't know if this hurts enough Americans. The main thing, you know, Johnson and his leadership were ultimately able to secure enough support from the holdouts after fighting tooth and nail a series of lengthy conversations yesterday that went late into the night.

1:45.9

And ultimately, they were able to pass the support from the holdouts after fighting tooth and nail in a series of lengthy conversations yesterday that went late into the night.

1:45.9

And ultimately, they were able to pass the bill, 218 to 214, with two Republicans joining all Democrats to vote no. And as for those two Republicans, you of course had Thomas Massey, who voted against the original House version and has been very clear about his opposition, making him a major Trump target, as well as Brian Fitzpatrick, who's

2:00.9

a moderate from a battleground district in Pennsylvania, who had raised concerns about the cuts

2:04.3

to Medicaid, food stamps, and other social safety net programs. Which, on the note of food stamps,

2:08.9

according to reports, this could be particularly devastating for people who also voted for Trump.

2:13.3

Right, SNAP participation, it's pretty even between Republicans and Democrats, but SNAP participation is especially high in a lot of districts in the South and the Midwest where Trump won. And that is you also have one progressive thing tank calling this the deepest snap cut in history and warning that over 2 million kids are going to lose at least some of their snap benefits. Though also, you have to imagine it was Trump that just jammed this thing over the line. Because William Trump, claiming, claiming on true social at around 9 p.m. last night, that everyone was unified after talks that he had with members earlier in the day. With him writing, it looks like the House is ready to vote tonight. We had great conversations all day, and the Republican House majority is united. But then, night turned into Thursday morning, and Trump was seemingly mad at this party that had proved him wrong. with them lashing out, shortly after midnight writing, what are the Republicans waiting for?
