0:17.0	Today I wanted to take a longer look at and explore Universal Basic Income, or UBI.
0:20.9	Now when you hear UBI, a lot of you probably think of Andrew Yang, and even though he's no
0:24.5	longer in the presidential race, he still succeeded in bringing this idea to the mainstream
0:28.3	in the United States with his freedom dividends, that being the idea to give every American
0:31.9	adult $1,000 a month.
0:33.7	And now with the coronavirus causing millions of people to lose their jobs and creating serious concerns around the long-term stability of the economy,
0:39.3	discussions about UBI are probably more prevalent than ever.
0:42.3	But basic income is not a new concept. In fact, ideas about basic income have been around for hundreds of years.
0:47.3	And there are many different kinds of income support or guaranteed income policies that have been proposed and even tested over the years,
0:53.3	but let's focus specifically on UBI for right now.
0:56.0	UBI is essentially a fixed amount of money given to people on a regular basis with no strings attached,
1:00.0	and while experts don't agree on an exact definition for UBI, there is a general consensus of two core principles.
