Summary

Paul Tenorio is back on the show (in a non-Allocation Disorder fashion) to discuss the Columbus Crew rebrand and why the folks in charge assume changing a logo means more butts in seats. We take a look at the process that led to the rebrand, why Crew ownership thought it was necessary, and where we go from here. Plus, the team that did rebranding right, the clubs that have the most authentic approach to messaging, and the most exciting teams in the league so far this season!

Hello,

0:02.0

Hello, everybody, and welcome to the Total Soccer Show.

0:07.0

My name is Taylor Rockwell. With me today is the man who used to be Paul Michael Tenorio but is now rebranded as Paul United S.C. Hi, Paul. Congrats on the update. Oh, thank you. I feel very good about what this is going to do for my global recognition.

0:44.2

I mean, that should do it. That does seem to be the leading cause of all rebrands these days.

0:48.6

That is obviously a topic we're going to go into in depth. We'll talk a little bit later about MLS in general the season so far. But let's start with the situation with the crew.

0:55.5

And I'll start on a basic level.

0:59.2

They've obviously done the rebrand for people who've missed it. Go look at some images and then come back and I'm sure you'll be confused. Paul, when you first saw this, what were your thoughts?

1:06.3

This is the Chicago Fire all over again. You know, it just feels like such a disconnect from what fans want.

1:14.2

And I get that MLS's take is basically like the diehard fans don't matter.

1:19.9

They're too small of a subset to matter.

1:22.2

And that just infuriates me for a lot of different reasons.

1:25.2

But I think, you know, a big part is just that those are the fans that create the atmosphere in the stadium that makes you different from everything else in this country and that makes other people spend money.

1:37.7

And so, you know, when I saw the logo, I was just like, this is so bad.

1:45.4

Like, it's so different and not in a good way.

1:48.1

Yeah.

1:48.3

Sometimes you can get different in a really good way, and this was not that.

1:52.5

So I understand they tried to incorporate some unique elements.

1:56.7

Like, I think the shape itself is a reference to the flag of Ohio.

2:00.1

But on a basic level, they didn't really consult with the fans.

2:04.0

I know there's the Brian Strauss article and the Sam article.

2:07.3

Sam wrote a good article for The Athletic about it.

2:09.1

Talking about how they claim they did consult with a few different people that's disputed.
