In 1991, the Big Dig is handed off to a new leader – the brash, aggressive, hatchet-toting Jim Kerasiotes – who makes it clear he plans to shake things up. The one thing he can’t shake is the equally aggressive private company managing the project. Now they have to work together.

0:00.0 | By 1991, Fred Salvucci had championed the big dig for almost 20 years, and when he finally laid that mantle down, he didn't know who, if anyone, would pick it up up next and he certainly had no idea that it would be an old adversary |
0:18.0 | someone about as un salvucci as you can imagine who would take that mantle on. A man named Jim Caraciosios. |
0:27.1 | I have to admit, I was a little nervous when I met for the first time with Jim |
0:35.2 | Carassiodis because I had heard the stories about Jim Carassiois, and most of them |

1:09.4 | I remember the hatchet. |
1:10.7 | I saw the hatchet. These stories have been repeated so many times that they |

1:40.0 | All right, how are we on sight lines? |
1:43.0 | I feel like that's always a challenge here. |
1:44.5 | Can you see me okay? |
1:45.4 | Yeah. |
1:46.4 | But it very quickly became clear that the carasyotis I was sitting across from |
1:51.2 | was not going to live up to all the stories I had heard. |
1:54.4 | Well, is it okay if we jump in? |
1:56.2 | Yeah, sure. |
1:57.2 | However you want to go. |
1:58.5 | And that Carocyotis himself sees those stories a little differently. |
