Summary

On the ninth episode of the Family Discipleship Podcast the hosts (Adam Griffin, Cassie Bryant, and Chelsea Griffin) address a very common issue that Christian parents face, parent guilt.. Questions that we answered in this episode:
  • Why is having a Romans 3:23 vision of parenting important for parents?
  • What is the difference between being hard on yourself for not being a better parent and sinning in omission or commission that requires repentance?
  • We feel guilty when we think we did something wrong, is there such a thing as right and wrong in Christian parenting?
  • What role does comparison play in parent guilt?
  • Do you see a difference between grief over sin and guilt over unmet expectations?
  • How can moms and dads preach the gospel to themselves when it comes to their parenting shortcomings?
  • What role does community play in addressing parent guilt?
  • Where do you see moms and dads potentially feeling guilty specifically around family discipleship?
  • What is a godly response to making parenting mistakes?
  • What is the relationship between parenting guilt and Christ’s warning to not be anxious about anything?
  • What does modeling a guilty reaction to our own mistakes model for our kids that we don’t want them to learn from us?
  • If we could not get over our parent guilt, how would you counsel us?

This is Adam Griffin, and before we get to our topic of the hour, let me first introduce you to my two lovely co-hosts first, Mrs. Cassie Bryant.

0:20.2

How are you doing today, Cassie?

0:21.8

I'm doing great. It's Friday. It's the weekend. It's the weekend. Yeah, it's the church worker weekend.

0:28.6

You get the Friday off. How about you? Chelsea, how are you doing today? It's Friday and I work, but I'm good.

0:36.2

Sorry, Chelsea.

0:40.9

Speaking of women working, let's talk about guilt.

0:42.9

Let's talk about parent guilt.

0:44.2

Is that a good segue?

0:49.8

Chelsea, actually, I think this is actually a good segue to what you do, because I feel like you get a unique perspective on parent guilt.

0:52.2

Because one of the more easy to judge stories that people

0:55.6

tell each other are each other's birth stories. And since you're a labor and delivery nurse,

0:59.3

I imagine you see people come in all the time with a birth plan that they are very proud of

1:04.3

or where their expectations aren't met. Maybe they came in and they wanted to have a natural

1:08.2

birth hanging from a ceiling fan and then they end up with a C-section.

1:11.9

I don't know.

1:12.7

Do you ever see any parent-guilt stuff coming into your door?

1:15.9

Do I ever?

1:17.3

Oh, my goodness, all the time.

1:19.6

Honestly, I feel like this is just anecdotal,

1:22.5

but I feel like I note it more among Christians than among other people,

1:30.2

which is sad to say, but true.
