Summary

Every story has a beginning. Every conflict has its roots. For some, the Israel/Palestine conflict is rooted in scripture and written in blood. Others claim it boils down to a deadly dispute over real estate. There’s a reason why “peace in the Middle East” feels out of reach and why so many have thrown their hands up. It’s complicated. But it’s not impossible to understand. We begin our journey in earnest by tackling the so-called “Jewish Question” and uncovering the roots and motives of the Zionist movement.

0:00.0	Hey, fuckers, it's Max. I want to thank everybody who responded to our introduction to the series,
0:05.1	and I want to also give you a rough outline for the remainder of the series proper. All told, I
0:10.4	envision three parts, not including the introduction. Two that tackle Palestine prior to 1948,
0:16.2	and one full post-48 episode with a conclusion that examines the past and future of the conflict
0:22.3	through a democratic socialist lens. And I'm breaking up the pre-48 period into perspectives,
0:28.1	the Jewish question and the Palestinian cause. Well, they might find peace in the Middle East
0:32.9	before you finish talking. One can only hope. I chose 1948 as the turning point of turning points in this story because it marks Israel's
0:41.2	recognition of statehood and the full realization of a national identity.
0:45.6	I want to be clear about a couple of things before we proceed, given the nature of the
0:49.3	war in Gaza right now and the humanitarian disaster that is unfolding before our eyes.
0:56.2	I offered several disclaimers and level-setting declarations in the introduction that do hold, but I want to reiterate that I view our
1:01.2	role here as wholly contextual. Even my posture of objectivity will cause consternation among those
1:07.2	who are emotionally tethered to the crisis. But please don't interpret my lack of outrage that is typical for this podcast as apathy.
1:14.3	My goal is to demonstrate that beneath the devastation, and at the root of it all, is the
1:19.2	specter of nationalism.
1:21.1	Even the religious justifications for homicidal activities are cover for the evils of
1:26.0	nationalistic fervor.
1:28.0	I'm undone at what's being done to the civilians of Gaza right now, still reeling from the
1:33.6	senseless death of innocence in Israel that incited the most recent crisis. Each day my news feed
1:38.9	and social feeds are filled with death and destruction alongside the talking heads that regurgitate false narratives
1:45.2	and talking points as though they're reporting on the weather. In the midst of it all,
1:49.8	our humanity appears to have disappeared. As I said in the introduction, all I can do is what I know,
