This is the Friends of History Debating Society. I'm John Batchel. The Fires of L.A., Jeff Bliss's Pacific Watch.

The last Jeff and I spoke, it was late, very late on Saturday night, East Coast time.

And there was the fire approaching Brentwood from the south. The Palisades fire was spreading through the undergrowth

on the mountains between the Palisades and Brentwood.

There was also the risk of the fire jumping the 405

and to the other side where there are many more communities to burn.

Jeff, a very good evening to you.

It appears that there is mixed news.

One, the fire has not jumped to 405, if I presume this headline, is accurate.

And two, the other part is that the winds are supposed to get stronger or are getting stronger? First of all,

the Pacific Palisades Park, the Pacific Palisades fire. What is its status? Good evening,

Jeff. Good evening, John. The fire still burns almost out of control, but it's an 11%

containment right now. That's, you know, a little bit better news than the days before.

But you have such a rich fuel bed in front of it, the Santa Monica Mountains, and this fire

will be eventually, you know, contained and knocked down. It's got a long way to go. With more

wins expected through the week, this could get worse.

And, you know, if it ramps up again, then it'll tear through the Santa Monica Mountains

and then once again endanger the communities in the San Fernando Valley below it

on the east side of the Santa Monica Mountain Ridge.

And so they're doing everything to knock it back.

Last night, firefighters all through the day fought valiantly to contain the fire,

at least to try to stop it from moving into more of Brentwood than it already had,
