This is the principal debating society. I'm John Bachelor. Jeff Bliss is specific what we go to Maui

0:06.7

of the late tragedy. Jeff, a very good evening to you. What is a paddle out? Good evening.

0:12.9

Good evening, John. A paddle out is a ceremony that surfer is in particular, but people who describe

0:18.4

themselves as water men are very, you know, ocean friendly. Well, undercake, this is something that

0:23.2

started with among Polynesians, very popular and why has come to the mainland around California.

0:29.6

And it's a way to memorialize people that we've lost. And so what will happen is a group of people

0:35.4

will paddle out in their surfboards. They'll form kind of a ring or a circle. And then typically,

0:41.9

people will go around the circle, you know, giving some kind of words for the people that were lost,

1:21.2

this very special ceremony. We have new statistics on the missing. What is it, Jeff?

1:28.0

So the new statistics on the missing are good numbers compared to what we were looking at before.

1:34.2

You know, we're only into around 98 or 99 as the last number I had heard. But we're talking about,

1:40.8

you know, fewer missing, many more identified. So it's again, what we've talked about that happens

1:47.3

after big catastrophes like that. There's often a lot of confusion. Sometimes remains can be mixed

1:52.7

together. So it takes time for scientists and corners and such to separate those and get a

1:58.1

proper identification. We're moving very close to it. You know, they're never going to get to,

2:03.3

I don't think a zero number when it comes to the missing, but they're going to keep working on it
