Jeff Bliss is Pacific Watch, and we begin with the Pacific Ocean.

Jeff is a big cahuna sometimes, not in the wintertime especially.

Right now, however, there's a big swell.

At first, I thought Jeff was flattering the ocean.

Gee, it's swell.

But then he sent me a photograph.

What is that, Jeff?

Good evening, John.

Well, the swell is a large movement, usually part of a weather system or some other

disturbance or, you know, situation that causes a large amount of water to move toward

the shore, either one direction or another.

And so right now we're getting a massive winter swell from the Pacific, obviously.

It's driving huge waves onto the beaches from, you know, from Oregon down to southern, you know,

Southern California. Up north in California, you're getting 50 and 60 foot waves, which are just, that is just massive.

And some of the photos I've seen of that have been, I mean, it almost looks science fiction because they're so big.

A little farther down south of San Francisco is the famous Mavericks surf spot, the home of big wave riders here on the West Coast.

And these guys and even some women are going out in 30 foot plus waves. And that's just massive.

You know, when a wave like that falls on you, it's like a huge skyscraper full of waterfall on you.

It's just tons and tons of water and plus all the forest. And then when you

get down here to Southern California, we've had, you know, 20 foot waves sometimes bigger. And what's
