Today's program is the first of two special editions of Inside Health,

looking at over-diagnosis and growing concerns that doctors sometimes try too hard.

Not an accusation often thrown at the NHS,

but last week's announcement that we should be doing more

to find a million or so people in England with undiagnosed kidney disease

has prompted accusations that we risk turning healthy people into patients and on the basis

of a test of questionable accuracy. None of us would be very pleased if the police said,

we've stopped you speeding. We think you were doing somewhere between 25 and 40 miles per hour

and we're going to

find you because you might have been doing 40. I said, well, just as easy you might have

done it, been doing 25. Tough mate. The test came out of 38, so here are your points. And kidney disease is

just one of a range of conditions where doctors are sometimes accused of being overzealous. Ray Moinian

is a senior research fellow at Bond University in Australia.

The problem that researchers are increasingly identifying is this problem called overdiagnosis.
