This is John Batchel, a conversation with colleague Charles Burton of synopsis about the reports that China is pressing Canada,

pressing Canada, working with Russia, to make inroads into the Arctic, the Canadian Arctic, the North American Arctic,

to make claims that are unjustified, to bully about the resources of the Arctic.

Here's Charles to explain and why anyone listens to them in Canada.

Well, I mean, you know, at present relationship between Beijing and Ottawa is politically not good,

but there's always a significant fraction of Canadian businesses that want to continue to

have lucrative relationships with Chinese business networks.

And if, you know, Beijing is unhappy because Ottawa is constraining its, it's aggressive

plans to expand its influence, territory, and military presence in the Arctic and strategic

presence through, you know,

cooperating with Russian ports and other facilities that they will then retaliate against

Canada economically by, you know, choosing other firms to provide China with commodities in,

you know, areas like mining or even agricultural commodities.

So there's always that leverage there that is kept more or less quiet from the public
